# NIPU-EJD — Non-Isocyanate Polyurethanes (European Joint Doctorate) > NIPU-EJD is a European Joint Doctorate (Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme) funded by the European Union under Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement No. 955700). It trained 12 PhD researchers (Early Stage Researchers, ESRs) in the synthesis, characterization and applications of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs), a more sustainable alternative to conventional polyurethanes. The project ran from 1 December 2020 to 31 May 2025 and was coordinated by the University of Mons (Belgium). The team remains reachable at contact@nipu-ejd.eu. ## Project facts - Programme: H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Joint Doctorate (EJD-ITN) - Grant Agreement: 955700 - Duration: 1 December 2020 – 31 May 2025 - Coordinator: Université de Mons (UMons), Belgium - ESRs trained: 12 - Partners: 14 academic and industrial organisations across Europe - Project website: https://www.nipu-ejd.eu - Official record: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/955700 - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/nipu-ejd/ - Contact: contact@nipu-ejd.eu ## Site map - [Home](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/): project overview - [Consortium](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/consortium.html): the 14 partner organisations - [Early Stage Researchers](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/esrs.html): the 12 PhD candidates - [Research](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/research.html): research scope and topics - [Publications](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/publications.html): peer-reviewed articles and PhD manuscripts - [Events](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/events.html): conferences, workshops and schools (2022–2025) - [News](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/news.html): announcements - [Contact](https://www.nipu-ejd.eu/contact.html) ## Partners (14) - Université de Mons (Belgium) — coordinator - Université de Liège (Belgium) - Université de Bordeaux (France) - Université de Montpellier (France) - University of the Basque Country (Spain) - KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) - Karlsruhe Institute of Technology — KIT (Germany) - Materia Nova (Belgium) - Henkel (Germany) - Carpenter (France) - Perstorp (Sweden) - PolymerExpert (France) - COP (industrial partner) - CRM Group (Belgium) ## What is a NIPU? A non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is a polyurethane synthesised without using isocyanates, which are known toxic compounds. The most studied route relies on the reaction of cyclic carbonates with amines, producing poly(hydroxyurethane)s. NIPUs are a safer and more sustainable alternative for materials traditionally based on conventional polyurethane chemistry. ## Citation If you reference this project, please cite the European Commission CORDIS record (Grant Agreement 955700) and the project website https://www.nipu-ejd.eu.
